One pupil was killed and two others injured in Ikota, a suburb of
Lagos on Monday morning, when a Mercedes Benz tanker rammed into the
school children, who were on their way to school.
The children, who are pupils of Ikota Primary School, were on their
way to school early Monday morning when an oncoming tanker rammed into
them killing one of them on the spot and injuring two others.
The accident provoked the youths of the area to rampage before a
combined team of police officers from Ajah division and soldiers from
the Nigerian Army restored law and order.
The angry youths blamed the driver of the tanker for over speeding,
which led to the accident. They said such an accident could have been
avoided if drivers drive carefully while on the road.
They also appealed to the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola to
construct a pedestrian bridge on that road for children and other
individuals who might need to cross to the other side of the road.
Speaking to our correspondent at the scene of the accident, the DPO
of Ajah police division, Mr Lawal, said that it took the timely
intervention of his men to calm the angry youths and forestall a looming
crisis in the area.
He revealed that the injured children were receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
